Moodboards // Conceptual happiness

Kyah_MoodBoard.png

Deciding to be a freelance has been an awesome ride already. Its constantly pushing (sometimes stressing) me to be a better design. I don't have professors and other students telling me how to do something and teaching me the best way to do this or that. Its all on me. Its great. I love it. it can be a little scary at times but that is part of the thrill for me. I'm currently starting a new project for a dancer that I cant wait to show some work from, but until I can, I thought I would share my mood board for recent client I just finished up with and posted on the site. Photography by Kyah Jo.

My favorite part of the design process has always been the initial development stage. Conceptualizing a brand and developing a visual story is soothing to this creatives soul. I love creating mood boards for clients. Its like one big collage party! Design blogs, Pinterest, fashion, color, my own created designs etc. all come together into a single visual that best represents what I envision the clients final logo to Feel like six weeks down the road. Usually my first stop when creating a mood board is Pinterest. I love how simple it is to find many visual elements in a relatively short amount of time. I also love using Behance which has thousands of wonderful creative people with amazing and inspirational work.

In a recent post, "Aural Moodboard," I was inspired to create a mood board using music instead of visual elements. I am fascinated by how a logo would develop from a moodboard like this and what it would look like. Music affects everyone so differently and on such an emotional level. Where visuals is more of an aesthetic entity (at least in design), music is more gut and emotional product. I wonder if a logo inspired by music would have a stronger emotional attachment to a brand than a visually inspired logo? This could be useful for many clients that rely on the emotional connection of their clients (ex, certain non profs, wedding photographers, businesses that supply help for others etc.) What are your thoughts on music inspired mood boards?

How do you develop your mood boards and branding concepts? What are some of your favorite tips and tricks to developing mood boards?

I know that Christmas is still over a month off but the holiday itch is already being scratched. I had made this design a month ago and I thought I would share it as a computer background with you all!

The first is a colorful fall orange version for those of you who who aren't quite ready to leave Autumn and its beautiful bright colors behind. I personally love the richness of this one!

The second is a lovely blue version that I hope you enjoy. This is for the those out there who are already embracing Winter and Christmas cheer ;) You know who you are! // It also gives the Autumn lovers (me) a wallpaper to use when we finally have no choice but to enjoy the beauty of cool, crisp Winter!

AURAL MOODBOARD | Fall

MixTap.png

aka. Fall Mix Tape.

Because I have been doing freelance all fall since I moved back to Madison in August I have been listening to music non stop. I mean I usually listen to music non stop seeing as I have a degree in it. And I typically dont do well with silence but I think I have hit a new level of obsession with the music I have been listening to the last few months.

The bands on this mix are the sickest of the sick. They are  all very different in their own right, which is awesome because they all inspire me differently. That's right. Inspiration. Music is definitely one of my inspirations for visual design. I think it would be sweet to add songs to mood boards. This is why I the title is Aural Moodboard. Music is such a relatable experience, and it would ad interactivity and multiple senses into our design concepts! It would be so sweet. Thoughts anyone? Would that be cool?

Either way, listen to the gigs on this mix. Some you may have heard of. Some you may not know. But while you are out there living your day turn these tunes up and let me know what you think.

Listen //  Spotify

 1. Silhouette // Active Child, feat. Ellie Goulding
2. The Mother We Share // CHVRCHES
3. Primetime // Janelle Monáe, feat. Miguel

Less Design = More Thought

MorningCoffee.jpg

Well here we go guys. Im blogging. And Im scared. Luckily I have my cup of Joe next to me to soothe my nerves (how does that work?). I've been working up to this day with some hesitation because to be honest, blogging is intimidating to me. But I want to tackle something new. Something to inspire me and you. Its exciting for me to start a blog because I'm not sure whats going to come out of it. Its especially exciting when your Joe was extra strong that morning and you are bouncing around your kitchen having a heart attack... but now I'm off on a rabbit trail. I want to blog so I can record my creative thoughts somewhere, and I hope that you will join me by reading these thoughts and sharing them with like minded people!

So strap on in and get ready for some creative, musical, wino inspired posts brought to you by yours truly and friends.
